Talk about this on our forums!
Every year, grown men will wake up a broke college kid only to have his life changed by NFL commissioner calling his name. You've seen it time and time again. They sit in the waiting room in tailored suits with their close intimate family. And as soon as their name is called they began crying like little girls. I've never been drafted so I can only speculate what that moment would be like. I've always had the conversation with my fellow teammates about what we would do, thanking God and kissing our mothers was the consensus. None of us planned to cry but seeing as small school guys are almost always surprised to hear their name called it would be sure to happen.
For this year’s draft, Cam Newton, he's not allowed to cry. Cam you've won the Heisman, and every other award possible to be given. Being drafted in the first round should be the least surprising thing of the past year. All of these accolades were due to being the best college football player in the nation. He’s also already a multimillionaire, thanks to his endorsement deal with Under Armor, so being drafted high is already expected. But for a small school guy who doesn't really have the Cam Newton name and isn't sure where the day’s events will lead him, he should cry like a baby. The stress of not knowing would bring you to tears, but if you’re a top ten pick you've known you'd be gone at that point. Stop the crying! Go shake the commissioner’s hand and call an acting coach. Now if players like Terrence Stephens, a 6'1” corner who has all the tools to be a draftable player, hears his name called he should cry and thank the good lord for all his days. And I'm sure this weekend, he will be watching the draft with his grandfather in Oak Ridge, Tennessee praying that someone wants to take a chance on him. Now I understand that getting drafted has been a lifelong dream so having it come true would be enough to bring anybody to tears. But if you’re sitting in that green room, it means your hard work has paid off enough so that at least somebody thinks you’re a first rounder. What about the small school guys who have worked hard and haven't received that attention? So first round guys take in the moment and enjoy it. And to the rest of you, I pray your wait isn't too long and if it is, allow it to fuel you.
