The Draftnik world loves to try and quantify items that are essentially unquantifiable. Speed, agility and explosion are three of those things that the draftnik community tries to quantify numerically. In an attempt to quantify these, I’ve developed some formulas that can help with this: Scar Speed, Agility and Explosion scores.

The Scar Speed Score is an attempt to develop a raw speed by weight. Taking into account the 40 yard dash, 20 yard dash and 10 yard split for straight line speed, as well as short shuttle and cone drill, it’s used as a pure speed more than just straightaway. I have the weight multiplied by a constant to make sure we have an easier to read number that was intending to be around 100. Some of the top speed scores since 2009 when I developed it, with starters in bold:

Top 10 in 2011 - CB Patrick Peterson, TE Jordan Cameron, TE Rob Housler, OLB Von Miller, RB Roy Helu, WR Julio Jones, LB Martez Wilson, RB Mario Fannin, DE J.J. Watt, QB Tyrod Taylor

Top 10 in 2010 - WR Joe Webb, WR Scott Long, RB Ben Tate, TE Jimmy Graham, RB Montario Hardesty, OLB Dekoda Watson, ILB Jamar Chaney, OLB Jason Worilds, TE Aaron Hernandez, DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim

Top 10 in 2009 - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, OT Lydon Murtha, ILB Mike Rivera, DE Connor Barwin, LB Aaron Curry, S Al Afalava, OLB Clay Matthews, S Chip Vaughn, CB Vontae Davis, RB Ian Johnson

The Scar Agility Score is used more as a short area quickness rating. It’s developed by taking the weight and multiplying it by a constant to make it around the 100 range as well, then it is divided by the short level quickness measures: the 10 yard split, short shuttle and the 3 cone drill. Some of the top agility scores since 2009 when I developed it, with starters in bold:

Top 10 in 2011 - DE J.J. Watt, TE Jordan Cameron, DT Marvin Austin, DE Adrian Clayborn, OLB Von Miller, OT Nate Solder, TE Rob Housler, DE Cameron Jordan, TE Schuylar Oordt, DE/OLB Brooks Reed

Top 10 in 2010 - DT/DE Tyson Alualu, OT Trent Williams, DT/DE Ndamukong Suh, DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, DE/DT Ricardo Mathews, TE Jimmy Graham, WR Scott Long, TE Aaron Hernandez, OLB Jason Worilds, OT Jared Veldheer

Top 10 in 2009 - DT Vaughn Martin, OT Lydon Murtha, ILB Mike Rivera, DT John Gill, DT Terrance Knighton, DE Connor Barwin, TE Andrew Davie, DE Antwain Robinson, OLB Clay Matthews, TE Kevin Brock

The Scar Explosion Score is a measure of short level explosion off the line. By taking the weight and multiplying it by their vertical jump, it gives a pure leg strength measure. Divide it by the split and the units look something similar to a boost measurement on a rocket (lb-in/s). The idea behind this score is to show how the player gets off the line and explodes with his body. Out of all of the scores, it’s been the closest as predicting solid NFL contributors. Some of the top explosion scores since 2009 when I developed it, with starters in bold:

Top 10 in 2011 - TE Virgil Green, OLB Dontay Moch, DE J.J. Watt, DE Allen Bailey, TE Jordan Cameron, RB Anthony Allen, TE Rob Housler, WR Greg Little, DE/OLB Justin Houston, WR Jonathan Baldwin

Top 10 in 2010 - TE Jimmy Graham, S Taylor Mays, DT/DE Ndamukong Suh, TE/WR Dorin Dickerson, OT Trent Williams, DT/NT Al Woods, OLB Dekoda Watson, DT/DE Tyson Alualu, DE Clifton Geathers, QB/WR Joe Webb

Top 10 in 2009 - DT Chris Baker, TE Jared Cook, DE/OLB Michael Johnson, DE/OLB Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB Connor Barwin, DE Cyril Obiozor, OT Lydon Murtha, OT Sebastien Vollmer, DT B.J. Raji, DE Phillip Hunt
